Dental hygiene tips for healthy teeth & gums

Are dentures a bad thing?

The cost-effectiveness of dentures makes them one of the best options for replacing missing teeth. In contrast, removable dentures can loosen and shift over time if they are not appropriately fitted, creating discomfort and interfering with speaking and eating. Looking at the advantages and disadvantages will help you to decide whether it is a bad option for you or not?

Advantages

  • Most patients find dentures the most affordable option because they are not as costly as other options.
  • After you’ve had your teeth extracted recently, you should consider dentures first to give your body a chance to heal.
  • Dentures may be a suitable solution depending on where the missing teeth are located. (Most patients find upper dentures to be comfortable and attractive).
  • This procedure does not involve any surgery.
  • The dentures can be easily modified to accommodate new teeth if they are lost in the future.

Disadvantages

  • Compared to dental implants, they don’t look quite as natural.
  • Regular removal and cleaning are required. Cleaning adhesives and cups is unpleasant for many patients due to their messy and expensive nature.
  • It is not recommended to wear dentures overnight.
  • Dentures can slip around, causing difficulty in speaking and eating.
  • Dietary restrictions may apply like candy, apples, and corn on the cob are not allowed to eat.
  • In cases where dentures trap food, gum disease is more likely to develop.
  • It is necessary to replace them frequently (every 3 to 6 years).
  • Some partial dentures can weaken the natural teeth adjacent to the dentures that support them.

Temporary dentures do not require surgery. Implanting a permanent denture is relatively safe, but surgery is required. There is also the risk of infection. Therefore, if they practice good oral hygiene and attend regular dental appointments, they shouldn’t have any infection, inflammation, or tooth pain problems.
