Dental hygiene tips for healthy teeth & gums

Do braces change face?

Orthopedic. It’s a big word, but it’s imperative in orthodontic treatment. The reason behind braces isn’t only that they straighten out your teeth. In addition to your jawline, lips, and overall facial profile, orofacial anatomies are also considered during orthodontic treatment. This is essential, especially for children who have not entirely built their bones.

Certain facial aspects can be adjusted more or less if you get braces depending on your age. You might have questions about how adult braces and Invisalign treatment impact your appearance when you receive those types of orthodontic therapies.

When it comes to braces, do they change a person’s face?
A person’s face can change significantly after receiving orthodontic treatment. You needn’t worry, though – braces only bring positive changes! A symmetrical and natural appearance of your mouth and jawline will be restored with braces.

What are the effects of braces on a person’s appearance?
A person’s appearance will be dramatically improved by correcting three main types of orthodontic problems. These include:

  • Underbites: A person with an underbite will appear to have a larger chin than their face should have. The jaw will appear softer and more natural with braces since it will no longer protrude outward.
  • Overbites: The chin with an overbite can seem elongated compared to someone with an underbite. A patient’s bite will be aligned with the help of braces, resulting in a stronger jawline
  • Open Bites: This condition gives the appearance that the lips and mouth are stretched out. An upper lip that protrudes may be a very noticeable issue as the mouth may not normally close in severe cases. The problem can be corrected with braces since they can align the teeth vertically to avoid getting bucked. This is because a patient will be able to naturally close their mouths without having to stretch the lips around the angled teeth, thus allowing them to swallow normally.
