What is the minimum age for teeth whitening

Amongst several dental tools and techniques, teeth whitening is one prominent treatment option to get the shining white teeth. With the advancements of time and technology, these treatments have become a new trend. They are much more accessible than they were ever before. However, that doesn’t mean everyone can employ them. So, it would be best if you were sure about the age criteria of teeth whitening.

Risks associated with whitening before the right age

Whitening treatment uses products containing bleaching agents. Now these agents are abrasive, having high chances of causing enamel wear with time. Thus, getting regular teeth whitening can leave you with sensitivity and make the teeth susceptible to decay.

So, the question is, why does age exactly matter here? Few parents and children might have the urge to use whitening products or the treatment to achieve a brighter smile. But, unfortunately, these products and even the natural teeth whitening products may harm the enamel in younger children. The fact that the baby teeth have fewer minerals than the permanent teeth and are more prone to demineralization justifies it.

From the above arguments, one thing becomes clear that teeth whitening for the baby teeth are not recommended. Thus, one must at least wait for the eruption of the permanent teeth. They generally occur between the ages of 12-13. Then the enamel calcification takes another two years after the eruption of the last permanent  teeth. So, getting the whitening treatment before this can cause tooth damage.

With this calculation, the minimum age for the treatment comes out to be around 16 years old. However, again this doesn’t mean you should get your child’s teeth whitened at his 16th birthday only as it still may carry some side-effects. In simple words, it may hinder the ideal growth of the teeth.

Even if you are aware of the teeth whitening procedure, you get to know a few more factors before the actual treatment begins. It will help you have appropriate expectations and a practical idea about it. Have a look at a few of them:

You might suffer from sensitivity: No matter what method you use for whitening the teeth, there are fair chances of post-treatment sensitivity. However, some toothpaste can actually reduce it to minimum levels.

Results are not permanent: The results of the treatment are not forever. The average time is around years, which varies from person to person. Experts suggest to use the mouthguard, avoid too much coffee and tea, quit smoking and red wine to have longer effects.

Must be performed by a dentist: Teeth whitening can only be performed by a dentist. Nonetheless, hygienists and dental therapists can also do it on the prescription.

Ask questions to the dentist: You are suggested to make the necessary queries about the existing filling or crowns to the dentist well in advance.

Teeth whitening yields instant results and so gifts you with the changed and appealing shades of your teeth. However, it may have some side-effects. So, make the decision wisely, and if you do, do it when the right age comes.

How much calcium does my child need

Calcium is one of the essential minerals that the body needs for proper growth. The absence of calcium in the kids and teens can not only cause them pain but also lead them to grow inappropriately, in which they might have the body parts in unusual size and shape.

Why Calcium?

The prime time to build strong bones is when the kids are at an early age and teenage phase. The strength of the bone will be the base for the stronger bones and painless body in later life. The adequate amount of calcium and other minerals will also guard them against Osteoporosis and fractures during sports. Moreover, for young kids, enough amount of Calcium and Vitamin D is essential to keep ‘Crickets’ away. Otherwise, if they suffer through rickets, they may get prone to bow legs, weak muscles, and stunted growth.

What are the sources of Calcium?

Having known about the essential requirements of Calcium, one needs to be known to the sources of Calcium. Calcium is found in various food items, dairy products like milk, yogurt, and hard cheeses being the biggest source amongst them. Note that the fat content in milk does not make much difference in its calcium amount. Now, not all the kids are okay with the intake of dairy products. Hence they will have to try other options to meet the calcium requirements of the body. Those options include-

  • Tofu
  • Soybeans
  • Broccoli, collard greens, Chinese cabbage, leafy greens, etc
  • Almonds and sesame seeds
  • Chickpeas
  • Oranges and Prunes

Besides these natural carriers of Calcium, companies today are adding Calcium to the bread, cereal, juice, and other foods that the kids consume with ease and interest.

How much Calcium do they need for the proper growth

The requirement of Calcium varies according to the age of the person. Undoubtedly, a growing child will require more support to support the growth of his bones and muscles than the others. The amount of Calcium is measured in milligrams(mg). Also, the best thing will be to cover the requirement through the food only. If one fails to do so, there are supplements available for the same.

Have a look at the requirement of the Calcium at two different stages-

Babies– The prime source of Calcium for a baby is breast milk. If the baby is younger than six months, they will need at least 200 mg of Calcium per day. Whereas, the age group of 6-11 months requires 260 mg of Calcium per day.

Kids and teens– Now, kids need the maximum amount of Calcium as they are growing and involve themselves in many physical activities. The calcium requirement is as follows-

  • Kids in 1-3 year age group- 700 mg of Calcium to be given in 2-3 servings.
  • Kids in 4-8 year age group- 1,000 mg to be given in 2-3 servings.
  • Kids as well as teens in the 9-18 year age group- 1,300 mg of Calcium to be given in 4 servings.

Thus, Calcium needs to be given to the child in an adequate amount to ensure the proper growth of the bones and muscles. Use the above information to utilize the sources mentioned and have knowledge of the right amount.
